Birthday in DR!

Last Saturday, November 18th, in Cabarete, Dominican Republic, at my birthday party!! No doubt, this was the best set of my entire life! Why? The answer is simple…. I was on a beach, in front of the sea and a full crowded party, filled with people who were sending me so much love, it was all so nice, happy and sincere, that how could I have played badly? I knew I had hours and hours in front of me, so I didn’t feel the pressure of having to start and getting to the point straight away…. So I took my time. It was an entire night of love making, with music and everyone at the same time! Ok, don’t get me wrong, I am still talking musically here! Nothing XXX happened, or at least not that I’m aware of! I started my set very calmly, very groovy but quite minimal, and didn’t hurry up to build it, I took my time, and like everything when you take your time, it’s done better, and it has more profound bases… It’s like doing a fire, it takes time to get all the charcoal become so red and burning, but once its there, everything you put on it burns so quickly! Well, I can tell you that one hour into my set, when I was seriously building towards some very intense moments, the crowd was fully into it, and at that moment the vibe became so great, that I could have played just anything and it would have worked! That’s how I like it. This is why I like never-ending sets, but I have to say also that these sets work on open-minded people, without prejudices!! Just like the ones who attended my 5 hours set, unfortunately cut shorter because of neighbors complaints, in Cabarete this past Saturday! But let me give you an example on why it only works with that kind of crowd… Five minutes before I got on the decks, a guy came up to me and asked me with a sign of his hands to come closer as he wanted to talk to me. I usually try to avoid hearing people’s comments before or during my set, because if they say the wrong things they can seriously fuck up my vibe. Since I clearly changed style I got a lot of comments during my sets that completely put me off. People don’t think you are trying to be creative and that bad comments can put you off and suddenly create a big change in the vibe that might even affect the rest of the crowd, no, of course not, they just think of themselves and their frustration. Anyhow, so this guy calls me and since I figured that in the DR I usually have no problem with the crowd and any musical direction I want to take, and that people love me for whatever I like to play to them, which is amazing, I thought I’d come closer and hear what he had to say… Well, he was one of them! I should have not come closer, but I was in such a good mood and felt so good about the night ahead of me that he didn’t really upset me, on the contrary, I found the strength to politely tell him to go to hell, in other words of course! That’s how our little conversation went… He says, “hello I’m from Venezuela, happy birthday, and I hope you will not play like last time you played there, I expect you to play hard!” I didn’t even let him finish his sentence that I cut him off saying “don’t expect anything!”, and I left!!! I saw his face, he had his mouth open down to the sand (the floor – we were on the beach as I said..), he certainly couldn’t believe what he had just heard, but that’s all he deserved! Honestly, if it existed to kill people for 15 minutes, and then they’d come alive again after that quarter of an hour, I would have killed him. If we could buy guns that only kill for 15 minutes, and the most expensive ones for an hour (for when you really, really want to snap at somebody and see them disappear, or seriously talk to the hand!), I’d certainly would have shot him with the one hour gun! I know it isn’t like that, and too bad, because violence would be much less of a big deal, and we could always just kill our boyfriends and girlfriends and friends and family members or anyone who pisses us off, but only for 15 minutes… or one hour! 🙂

Anyway, aside of him, (hope he got right back to Venezuela – or that he got more educated!), I really want to thank Eduardo for giving me such an amazing and memorable birthday party again! I also want to thank all my fans who came to hear me play and dance to my music! You gave me such an amazing party that the only bad comment I have is how stupid I was for not recording my set, because I remember the whole thing and thanks to you all it was truly unbelievable! Thanks for all your gifts, your smiles, your words, your screams, and I really, really look forward to come back here soon again… Have you noticed? I said here… well that’s because now it’s time for me to relax, enjoy the sea and the sun, and drink some really cold Presidente!! You guessed it… I’m still here!!! And I’m  loving every second of it!! 🙂

Salud!!! Barbara xxxx
